Principle of the Method

Carbon particles coated with a lipid complex—including cardiolipin, lecithin, and cholesterol—react with reagins, antibodies produced by the immune system in response to tissue damage caused by Treponema pallidum, the agent responsible for syphilis.

Visible agglutination indicates a reactive result.
Because titration is possible, the method is also useful for monitoring disease evolution and the patient’s response to antibiotic therapy.
